Discover the Science Behind Topical Probiotic Skincare

Why do I need probiotics in my skin care?

Similar to probiotics for the gut, our skin needs the beneficial bacteria that sits on the surface of the skin. Without these skin-friendly microflora, the skin becomes more susceptible to invading pathogens, environmental aggressors and premature aging. Using the topical probiotics in the GLOWBIOTICS MD products increases skin barrier integrity and decreases inflammation. They call upon the skin’s immune cells to stimulate reparative molecules producing key structural proteins like collagen.

What are Probiotic Derived Bioactives?

Live bacterial strains have not proven to be as beneficial when applied topically due to their inherent limitations in regard to stability and molecular weight. Studies have shown that it is NOT the whole living probiotic bacterial cell that is needed for the probiotic activity. Probiotic Derived Bioactives or PDBs are what is produced when the live strains are put through a special fermentation process. This allows a natural secretion of a secondary molecule. It is these molecules have been shown to improve the skin’s renewal process.

Don't probiotics have to be refrigerated?

GLOWBIOTICS MD utilizes the specialized Probiotic Derived Bioactives (PDBs) which are the non-living, therefore, do not need to be refrigerated.

I take oral probiotics; do I still need GLOWBIOTICS MD products for my skin?

While oral probiotics and topical probiotics work in a very similar way, you will still need topical probiotics to stimulate the desired repair and renewal process on the skin.

What does it mean that GLOWBIOTICS MD is a "clean" line?

At GLOWBIOTICS MD we understand the importance of avoiding ingredients that can cause harm. This includes the use of xenoestrogens that are known to disrupt our important endocrine and reproductive processes within the body. To this end, the GLOWBIOTICS MD products have been formulated without the key xenoestrogens often found in other skin care products. These include parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil and artificial dyes.

What are parabens?

Parabens are defined as chemicals used as preservatives to fight bacteria and fungus in foods, cosmetics, toiletries and pharmaceuticals. We have a higher exposure to parabens with cosmetics/toiletries as they bypass the GI tract where they might be broken down. Studies show they may be linked to cancer and have been found in breast tumors. Most products sold in the mass market will contain parabens and many contain 3-5 different parabens.

Do GLOWBIOTICS MD products contain parabens?

GLOWBIOTICS MD products are formulated paraben free.

What are phthalates?

Phthalates are defined as esters of phthalic acid and used mainly as plasticizers (substances that add flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity). Most countries in Europe have banned phthalates in their products but the FDA is still allowing the use of phthalates in many products in the US. As plastics age and beak down, the release of phthalates accelerates. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors – linked to breast cancer and birth defects. There is also new information that links phthalates and the early on-set menopause.

What are sulfates?

Sulfates (SLS) are surfactants and found in almost all products that foam. They dissolve skin oils and damage the skin's protective layer. SLS denature proteins and cause irritation and allow environmental contaminants easier access to the lower, sensitive layers of the skin. SLS can be very irritating and have been used to create skin irritations in the labs to measure the healing characteristics of anti-inflammatory drugs. SLS can cause eye irritation which can be acute corneal damage or damage through absorption in a non-eye area. As mutagenicity, SLS has been strongly linked to cancer.

Why it’s important to avoid artificial dyes

Artificial dyes cause an increased risk of allergies, asthma, hyperactivity, behavior problems in children, increased risk of developing Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. When we see hyperactive children and adults, it is suggested that by simply removing all the artificial colors from their diets often times their symptoms decrease.

Do GLOWBIOTICS MD products contain fragrances?

GLOWBIOTICS MD uses what’s known as bio-identical fragrances. Some of the most effective raw ingredients can have an unpleasant smell and odor. In order to create a more pleasing experience, these odors need to be masked. Many “natural” and “organic” ingredients utilized in skincare contain plant-based essential oils, that can cause allergenic and irritancy response on the skin, including an increase in photo-sensitivity. Bio-identical fragrances mitigate this. They are synthetic molecules that are biologically identical to their botanical counterparts.
